By Jared Keo

In today’s society, the family core is constantly being threatened. It has become popular to hold off on getting married, and it’s now trendy or glamorous to be single and able to “mingle”. However, it’s the family that provides the most happiness to any individual. When times get hard, the family, not your friends, are the ones that will love and support you unconditionally. This article is not to speak ill of the importance of having good friends, but rather to bring to attention that there are activities that can be done as a family that will strengthen the bond of the family nucleus.

Most people define Disneyland as the happiest place on earth. However, how many times do you need to visit Disneyland before you realize that it has become extremely expensive, and once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it all. Surfing can become a healthy alternative to the annual family vacation. Taking a surfing vacation as a family will provide the experience that all families can appreciate. In fact, surfing as a family activity can prove to draw families closer to each other.

The simple fact that you are going to the beach as a family means that everyone is being active. This will lead to a healthier lifestyles as a family, and can lend to many teaching and learning opportunities. Dependent on the conditions of the surf, a parent can teach patience, respect, and perseverance to a child as they are surfing. One must be patient in order to catch the right wave. He must be in the right position, and must also respect the ocean and its force. In tough conditions, he must demonstrate perseverance to not only maintain position, but also to be able to catch the wave.

Other lessons can be taught. Discipline, Determination, Humility, and Love are examples lessons that can be learned through surfing.

Taking a surfing vacation is probably the best thing a family can do every year. Most surf camps offer a variety of surf vacation packages that fit the skill level of all surfers. In some cases, a mother may be just “tagging along”, but may want to take a few surf lessons in between her time at the spa. A father may want to spend most of his surf sessions with his sons and/or daughters. What ever combination makes up your family, consider taking a surf vacation with the family.

Surfing is an activity that is relatively cheap when you consider the amount of time you can spend in the ocean. The key to having a happy family is doing things together. Surfing is a great way to keep a family close to each other, and it’s the type of family activity that will never get old.

Stay stoked!

It’s time to take the family surfing! Visit http://www.soulsurfsession.com and book your next family surf vacation. If you’re a beginner, wanting to learn, or an experienced charger, stay at all-inclusive accommodations and surf crowd-free waves. Guaranteed fun at http://www.soulsurfsession.com

By Miles D.C.

Some say surfing is an “extreme sport” and that label alone is enough to give anyone who wants to give it a try enough reason to doubt whether they can do it or not.

But then, you have to remember, not all kinds of surfing is “extreme”. How about just trying it out long enough to know how liberating it feels gliding thru the water. Never mind if they’re not 6 feet waves just yet. Those 3 footer ones will give you a sweet ride too.

So, for those who want to give surfing a try, here’s a few pointers to keep in mind:

1. Safety First.

On your first try, it would be best to have someone out there with you. A licensed instructor would be even better. And he/she has to have the same mindset about it. It’s no use giving surfing a try if after your first lesson you end up badly bruised and traumatized by the experience.

2. Bruises Are To Be Expected.

Let’s face it. Surfing is not your run-of-the-mill sport. You’ll get tossed around. You’ll wipe out several times. A lot of times. You’ll fall face first into the water and even if it’s just water, it will hurt. You’ll slip on your board if you don’t pay attention. Or if you’re like me, you wouldn’t know yet how to turn and hit the rocks (twice in my case) and get all these cuts and bruises on your knees and legs. You’ll get rashes on your legs and tummy, maybe even your arms.

Expect to get bruised up a bit. It’s part of the learning process. And if by the end of your lesson, you’re already standing up and giving folks the hang ten sign, then those cuts and bruises are your true badges of honor.

3. The Goal Is To Be Able To Stand Up… Not Look Cool.

Here’s the thing. You’ll see professional (or at least people who’ve been surfing for some time) looking all cool on their surfboard, doing all those tricks, and smiling while they’re at it.

But let’s be realistic, you’re goal, at least on your first try, is to be able to stand up. All the way to the shore if that’s possible. Being able to stand up may come easily to others though and you’ll just have to see for yourself when you’re out there if you need more time finding your sea legs or not.

It came easily for me. I stood up on my first try and that much I’m proud to say. But then again, I’ve been pole dancing for more than a year now and that means I’ve been able to develop my core, arms, and leg muscles, not to mention sense of balance. So it’s not just about being brawny or having bulging arms muscles – I’m a tiny barely 5″1 woman who doesn’t weigh more than 95 pounds. You need to have developed the right set of muscles to be able to catch and ride that wave.

If after a couple of wipe outs you find yourself standing up long enough not to fall, or at least fall gracefully (like you meant to), make sure you do the hang ten sign and give a big smile to whoever may be watching – because someone always will be. You’re having fun. Now that’s cool.

4. Respect The Wave.

Remember, it’s not just water. It’s Mother Nature. It’s the rhythm of the moon. It’s a force to contend with so learn to respect the wave. Don’t take it for granted just because you think you’re a pretty ok swimmer. Listen to it, feel it. Feel the swell under your board and let it take you where it wants to.

OK. I’m waxing romantic here but only because there’s nothing quite like the feeling of standing up and feeling the water’s power under your surfboard.

It’s such a natural high. And you’ve got to respect the wave to be able to feel that.

5. Have Fun With It.

In the off chance, you find, that your balance sucks. Or your muscles are not yet well suited for surfing. Or you get bruised up really bad… there’s really only one thing to do. Just have fun with it.

Hey. At least you tried. Who knows, maybe you’ll do better at windsurfing instead. Now that’s another sport I’ve tried and enjoyed enough to want to try again.

As for you, fellow beginner, I say, kudos to you for trying.

By Christine E Armstrong

Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku was born in Waikiki on the 24th of August 1890 and went on to become the father of modern surfing. Duke is not a title but a given name after his father who was christened Duke in honour of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh who was visiting Hawaii at the time. Some actually thought he was royalty because of his name but he was a very humble and unassuming man who was always ready to put the record straight.

The eldest of 10 children he had 6 brothers and three sisters, his father was a policeman and his mother a deeply religious woman with a strong sense of family. Growing up on the outskirts of Waikiki he dropped out of school early on and embarked on the life of a beach boy. He grew to 6.1 feet and weighed 190 pounds and had the well-defined upper body that all the great watermen possessed, as amazing as his body was it was his feet and hands that were truly extraordinary, some would say he had fins for feet, the ocean was his home and he had absolutely no fear of it.

Often seen riding the waves of a break called Castles where only a few dared to surf on his 16 foot surfboard made of Koa and without skeg his theory was that big boards were for riding big waves and when he caught one he would yell “COMING DOWN” He didn’t drink or smoke and if in a fight would not punch but slap, he preferred to use his eyes to vocalise what he was thinking, a quiet spoken man who seldom raised his voice, a formidable waterman excelling in rough water swimming, surfing and canoe paddling. Baptised in the ocean according to the ancient custom he was paddled out in a canoe by his uncle and thrown over the side it was swim or else, the family believed they came from the ocean and it was there they would return. His mother encouraged her children to not be afraid of the ocean and there was no restriction as to how far from shore they could venture.

Kahanamoku easily qualified for the US Olympic swimming team in 1912 breaking the record in his 4 x 200 metre trial relay and went on to win the gold in the 100 metre freestyle in Stockholm in 1912 and silver in the relay. In the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp he won gold in both the 100 metres and relay a silver medal in the 1924 Olympics in Paris with his brother winning the bronze medal. He also played for the US water polo team at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Many collectable pieces of his life all original from days past have been stored in Hawaii a tribute to the man who was at the forefront of an art that has now been responsible for creating a healthy sport for those with a love of the ocean. Café walls in Waikiki show an amazing insight into the life of one of the truly great Hawaiians.

By Hayden Rhodes

1. Always watch the ocean.

Good surfers always have their eyes peeled on the horizon, looking for what surprises the ocean may throw their way. Turning to face the beach is one of the most dangerous things to do as you might end up head first into the sand or coral. When you learn it is easy to forget that a wave may approach at any time and from any angle.

2. Rip Currents

Rips can be a blessing or a danger. Always know before you enter the water where rip currents are, what direction they are running and how far out to sea do they go. Surfers often use rips to help them get out the back, but they can become dangerous when you lose your board and cannot swim well. Flow with rip currents if you are in them and learn to read the ocean before paddling out.

3. Surfing Fitness and Surf Training

By participating in surf training and improving your surf fitness before you enter the ocean you enhance your own safety and will improve faster as a surfer. Surfing is a demanding sport that will challenge your fitness levels, strength and endurance. The best surf training is spent on improving surfing fitness combined with specific strength training for surfing and time in the water. Surf Training involves a lot of diverse movements that will help with your movements in the water.

4. Paddling Power

The ocean is very strong and you will find out very quickly that you need to be able to paddle with power when you go surfing. In order to do this work on your surf training and also ensure your paddling technique is good. Many surfers lose their energy and momentum because they cannot generate speed and power when paddling.

5. Wax all of your Board

So many learners forget to wax the spots where their hands go to prevent falling when popping up and also forget to wax the entire board, thinking they will only need wax for their feet. When out in the ocean you will move your feet to different area’s and will want to have as much surface area covered as possible for grip.

6. Catch the wave before you stand.

Many learners think the goal is to stand up, that comes second. First you have to use your surf training and paddle power to catch the wave. Only after you know you have caught the wave and you feel the waves power can you then stand up and start to surf. The only exception is when using a stand up paddle board.

7. Stay out of the impact zone

The energy area where waves are consistently breaking and good surfers are taking off from is the most dangerous area for anyone to be. If you get trapped there, point your board to the beach and go in for a rest before moving down the beach to paddle back out again.

8. Learn in a comfortable environment.

It is very difficult to enjoy learning when you are cold, shivering or in a place that is covered in rocks and reefs. Learn in a spot that has smaller waves and in a warm environment so you can spend more time in the water focusing on practice and technique.

9. Know your Limits.

It is very easy to look out at breaking waves and think they are small and easy to surf. When you paddle out you may realize you are out of your league. Surfers like to push themselves into bigger and faster waves, just know what your level is and avoid endangering yourself or others by going out in conditions that may be too much for your current limits.

10. Weight Training for Surfing

Being strong with good muscular endurance for surfing can be effectively achieved in the gym. Weight training for surfing in a circuit format is one of the best ways to improve surfing fitness as it challenges many energy systems in the body used for surfing. Avoid doing any form of training that is not surf training specific.

11. Surround yourself with Friends.

Learning is a humbling experience and also a fun one when shared with friends. Find a group of people and develop your skills together.

12. Treat others with respect.

There can be a lot of people in the water at one time trying to catch waves. Treat people with respect and share the waves, another one will always come along and sharing the ocean is what surfing is all about.

So enjoy the ocean, use these points to improve your surfing and remember surf training and improved surf fitness is the base of catching more waves.

By Michael H Russell

Do you want to learn how to surf? Sure, you most likely have a romanticized idea of gliding seamlessly across a cascading wall of water, carving up and down the face of the wave, riding all the way to the beach… right?

Wrong. Chances are, if you’ve never surfed before be prepared for, let’s just say a very humbling experience. Hate to break it to ya, but learning to surf is not easy. Sure, anyone can take a lesson and be technically ‘surfing’ within as little as a few minutes on mushy, crumbling white-wash waves. But c’mon any surfer will tell you that’s not really surfing. If you want to experience the thrill of surfing so indescribable its said “only a surfer knows the feeling,” then you’re going to need lots of practice, patience, and most likely some helpful tips and suggestions.

If you stick with it, past the embarrassing wipe-outs and initial awkwardness, you’ll eventually experience that amazing ‘thrill’, but be warned it could change your life!

Paddling a Surfboard: 3 Tips for the Beginner Surfer

Position yourself on your surfboard with your hips centered and balanced. Imagine your surfboard is like a seesaw; you want the nose and tail evenly balanced. If you are positioned too far forward your surfboard will pearl, too far back and you’ll sacrifice speed and have a hard time catching waves. As a rule of thumb, keep the nose of your surfboard hovering only a couple of inches out of the water while paddling.

’Ankle to ankle’: To help prevent swaying side to side (left to right), you’ll want to keep your ankles glued together. This may seem difficult at first, but the key to effective paddling is a strong core. Keeping your ankles together while paddling your surfboard will tighten your core and improve your balance. Just remember ‘ankle to ankle’ the next time you feel wobbly and I guarantee this little trick is sure to help.

Cup your hands as if holding water in them to drink. This is how you want your hands to be when paddling. Stretch your arms straight out in front one at time and plunge your cupped hands down deep following through all the way. Try to prevent your shoulders or hips from swaying too much from side to side by keeping your core balanced and straight. This will help your surfboard plane across the water improving speed and ultimately making it easier to paddle.

Special tip: Take note of which surfers seem to be catching the most waves. Watch them closely and notice their paddling form. Are their ankles apart? Does the nose of their surfboard hover only a few inches out of the water? Is their paddling stroke even and steady? Chances are they’ve been surfing for years, so don’t worry so if you’re not catching as many waves as them. Learning to surf is a process that takes time and lots of practice.

Practice your stance on the beach first.

The very first thing you should know before you try standing up on a surfboard is whether you are a ‘regular’ or ‘goofy’ surfer. No, not whether or not you look goofy surfing, because trust me, all beginner surfers look goofy while learning to surf.

So what am I talking about? Well, the terms regular and goofy refer to which foot you naturally place forward on your surfboard. A ‘regular’ footer surfs left-foot forward, while a ‘goofy’ footer surfs the opposite, right-foot forward. If you have ever tried skateboarding or snowboarding, then it’s usually same stance.

Not sure? These three techniques should help you figure it out:

Bend your knees and find a relaxed and balanced stance as if you were surfing. Try to determine which foot forward feels the most comfortable. Usually the stronger foot is placed towards the back to help put weight on the tail of the surfboard for turning purposes.

Lay on your stomach as if paddling and then quickly pop-up into your surfing stance. Notice which foot you naturally place forward.

This simple trick requires help from a friend. Find a level place to stand, close your eyes and relax, and without announcing when, have your friend lightly push you in the back so that you naturally step forward. The foot you place forward to catch your balance will most likely mirror your natural surfing stance.

Still not sure? Don’t worry you should be able to figure it out after a few rides.

Note: It’s important to always place your leash on your back foot. This will help prevent your leash from getting tangled around your legs.

Where Should a Beginner Learn to Surf?

If you’ve never surfed before or you are still in the learning stages then you may need some suggestions for picking an appropriate beach to learn to surf. Let’s start by providing a simple explanation of the different types of surf breaks:

A) Beach Breaks: Sandy bottom, typically break in shallow water close to shore. Often, these waves break best near piers or rock jetties. The shape of the wave is formed by the shifting contour of the sand below, therefore wave quality can vary greatly by season or even daily as underwater currents constantly adjust the sand’s position underneath.beach break wave A Beach Break is probably the best place for a beginner to learn to surf (initially). The shallow water makes it easy to stand when you fall off your board, and the sandy bottom usually has few hazards to step on. However, look out for swimmers! Most beaches during the summer have designated areas for swimmers only. Look for the ‘blackball flag’, and stay clear of that area. You’re a surfer now, so you gotta hang in the surf zone from here on out:)

B) Reef Breaks: These types of waves are formed by either rock or reef bottoms. Some of the most treacherous waves in the world break on uber-shallow coral reef. The world famous ‘North Shore’ of Oahu is comprised almost exclusively of shallow reef breaks. However, as a beginner you may not be ready just yet to conquer humongous spitting barrels. Don’t worry the greatest thing about reef breaks is their diversity. As you advance past the initial stage of learning to stand up, you’ll most likely want to head towards a reef break that offers gentle slopey waves.reef break wave Tip: Look for the ‘longboard’ spots. Reef breaks can provide longer rides than beach breaks and give you that opportunity to really feel the glide of your surfboard underneath your feet. That first ‘face’ wave you catch will stick with you forever. Note: reef breaks can often be more crowded than beach breaks, so make sure you’ve mastered the basics (paddling, turtle diving, and turning your board around quickly) to avoid clashes with other surfers.

C) Point Breaks: Point Breaks can offer some of the best shaped and longest rides available. Appropriately breaking against a ‘point’: these waves typically bend around the outer edge of a bay or peninsula, and can have sand, rock, or reef bottoms. Famous examples include my personal favorites Rincon in Santa Barbara or Honolua Bay, Maui. If you’re not familiar with these places, search on Google and you’ll see photos of long, smooth, perfectly contoured waves just begging to be ridden.point break wave. The kind of waves the daydreaming student-surfer would doodle on his or her notebook during class… just perfection! Note: perfection usually doesn’t go unnoticed, so be prepared to battle it out with a bunch of other wave-hungry surfers looking for that perfect ride. Caution: Intermediate and advanced surfers only.

D) The Rivermouth: often the most fickle of surfbreaks, rivermouths are essentially beach breaks with sandy bottoms, but under the right conditions can occasionally rival the shape and form of any of the best reef or point breaks out there. Rivermouth surf breaks usually turn on after a hard rain when an onslaught of water trying to reach the sea pushes a temporary build up of sand in just the right spot to funnel incoming swell into jacking walls of water. Caution: beware of water pollution in urban runoff areas.

In summary, stick to the beach breaks while you master the fundamentals of paddling, and balancing on your board, but don’t be afraid to endeavor out to the ‘longboard’ reef breaks for some real adventure!

Surfing terms for the beginner

The following is a mini-glossary of surfing related phrases and keywords, some of which have been used thus far:

Black-Ball: A yellow flag with a black ball in the center used by lifeguards to warn surfers of an area off-limits to surfing.

Barrel: The ultimate ride is when the crest of a wave folds over itself and forms a cylinder shape with enough space to provide a “tube” for the surfer to ride through. Related terms: pulling in; getting shacked, pitted, tubed, or otherwise barreled; filthy pits; the green-room.

Dropping in: Refers to the critical point when a surfer stands up on a face-wave that is cresting. (Dropped in on), used to describe the act of one surfer wrongly riding in front of another surfer on the same wave. Also see: snake

Face-Wave: The crest of a wave that surfers ride. Usually breaks on the outside peak. Could be considered the opposite of white-wash waves.

A Fish

(a) Fish: No, not the kind that stealthily swim underneath and around you. A Fish in this sense refers to a type of surfboard. Usually shorter and wider than a typical modern shortboard, often modeled after vintage 70′s designed surf boards.

(a) Gun: Taller sleek and narrow surfboard used by advanced surfers for riding bigger waves.

Kook: A derogatory term used to describe, well… usually beginner surfers who don’t know what they’re doing out in the water. Basically equivalent to the not so flattering term “idiot”. If you can’t spot one then chances are it’s you…nah just kidding!?

Pearl (ing): This happens when the nose of your surfboard dunks under water while riding a wave causing your surfboard to come to an abrupt stop, most likely pitching you forward and off your surfboard.

Rip-current: Strong undertow current of water headed straight out to sea. Look for slightly brown or discolored and choppy water. If caught in current, swim parallel to shoreline to escape.

Snake(d): Describes getting unjustifiably cut-off by another surfer. See also: dropping in (on someone).

Stoked: To be super pumped on something, friggen awesome!. Ie. The waves are going off, I’m so stoked right now!

White-Wash: The white-foamy type of waves that have already broken upon themselves and are tumbling toward shore. Beginners usually practice surfing these waves first before tackling the faster moving face-waves that break on the outside peak.

The major rule is to have fun!

By Hayden Rhodes

Using your body weight to improve your surf training for optimal surfing performance has many benefits. Firstly you can train anywhere and at anytime. You can choose to do your surfing workouts outdoors in the fresh air, down on the beach or in your hotel room when traveling or competing on tour.

Secondly, you do not need to carry any additional equipment or training gear, all you need is your body. If any other training equipment is required you can quickly adapt to your surrounds and use things like chairs, benches, playgrounds or even just a wall to help with your surfing workouts.

Lastly and most importantly is that by using your entire body you are training muscle patterns rather than specific muscles. This is important because surfing is an athletic sport that requires integration of many movement patterns happening all at once. Training your body to become stronger in entire movement patterns will greatly assist with surfing endurance and surfing power.

While many people believe that surfing workouts are all about building muscle or bulking up. This is not the case. Effective surf training means focusing on developing postural muscles crucial for joint stabilization, general strength and improved ranges of motion and not putting on excessive muscular bulk. Body weight surf training is ideal for these purposes and means that once your body has adapted to full body training methodologies and basic endurance it is more likely to respond better when power movements are introduced.

By using body weight to develop strength and strength endurance we can then safely increase the intensity of surfing workouts to incorporate more dynamic and explosive movements. Surfing training must have some component of power development and the best way to do this is through dynamic body weight movement patterns that mimic surfing requirements. This will quickly assist with powerful rotational movements performed in critical sections of fast moving waves.

While lean muscle is crucial for performance it is important to note that strength training in a gym may leave you with restricted ranges of motion unless an experienced surfing coach or trainer supervises you.

As you can see the benefits of surf training and surfing workouts can be easily achieved by using only your body weight. The key is structuring each surf workout carefully so there is natural strength progression in connective tissue, joints and muscles so the body naturally responds favorably and leads to a balanced more powerful surfer.

By Tony N Gile

1. The first thing to do is figure out which temperature wax to buy for your surfboard. You will need to check with your local surf shop on the average water temperature for your area. Below is a quick reference chart to help you select the right surf wax for your area:

Cold Water Wax (water temp 58 degrees F and below)

Cool Water Wax (water temp 65 degrees F and below)

Warm Water Wax ( water temp 66-74 degrees F )

Tropical Water Wax ( water temp above 75 degrees F)

Use this wax chart for estimates only, as different wax brands will vary. You will also want to purchase a base wax along with your top coat. If no base wax is available a bar of tropical surf wax will work for your base coat.

2. The next step is applying a good base coat to your surfboard. The base coat, made up of harder wax, helps to keep your later layers of wax from matting down (flattening out on the deck of your board). A good wax job should have wax bumps on the deck of the board to help bead the water and provide good traction. I like to heat my base wax up by putting it in the sun for a few minutes, or putting it in the microwave for a short amount of time before applying it to my board. Please Note: If you use the microwave to soften your wax do so at your own risk. Check owners manual or contact manufacture to make sure it will not damage anything and is safe to do. Remove the label and put the wax in a small dish in the microwave. The small dish will help collect any melted wax, as you do not want melted wax all over your microwave. After 30 seconds in the microwave, check to see if the base wax softens up so it will be easier to apply. After you have your base wax softened up, follow this sequence for application:

First, apply the base wax to the deck of the surfboard with lengthwise vertical strokes only

Secondly you apply the base wax with horizontal strokes only

Thirdly you want to apply the base wax with diagonal strokes only

Fourthly you will apply the base wax with diagonal strokes opposite of the diagonal strokes you already applied

Lastly apply circular strokes with the base wax and you should see some good bumps starting to form if you have applied the base coat correctly

3. You are now ready for your top coat. Apply the top coat wax the same way you applied the base coat, and you will have some great wax bumps on your board!

4. A few extra tips to keep your wax job looking great: If the outside air temperature becomes extremely hot, feel free to move up to warmer wax, even if the ocean temp remains the same. This can prevent your wax from melting during commutes. Storing your board in a light colored or reflective board bag can also help keep your wax from melting. Do not leave your board in the hot sun, or a hot car, as it will melt and ruin your wax job and the heat is also hard on the fiberglass. When hanging out on the beach try to keep your board deck side down to keep the sun from melting the wax. Setting your board on its bag or on a towel will keep sand from sticking to the wax.

5. A few quick tips for removing your old surf wax: Set your board out in the sun for a few minutes to help soften the wax (Avoid long term exposure. You do not want to damage the fiberglass). Get a plastic wax scraper and scrape off as much of the old wax as you can. If you want to get all the wax off the deck of your surfboard. Purchase some citrus based wax remover (read warning label and keep out of your eyes) and apply on any remaining wax and let sit for a few minutes. Then rub off with a clean soft towel and some elbow grease. Waxing your surfboard is fairly easy when done correctly. You should now be able to wax your surfboard like a pro. Have fun and go surfing!

By Ted Parry

Compared to many other sports out there, surfboarding isn’t too high cost. Many other sports require you to buy many accessories and equipment before you can take part and this can build up quite rapidly. However with surfboarding this isn’t the case, in most cases all you’ll need is a surfboard and a pair of swimming trunks which you probably have anyway. These tips should help you decide with much more confidence if a surfboard is the right one for you.

Type Of Surfboard

When going to purchase your first surfboard a lot of consideration needs to go into what type it needs to be. The best type of surfboard for a beginner has been noted to be the long board. This is because it will hold your weight much better as there will be more buoyancy for you to stay upright.

The Length

When choosing a surfboard you should always try and aim for one longer than yourself especially if you’re a beginner. Some people have said that it’s best to go for a surfboard that’s 12-16 inches longer than yourself. Having a longer board makes it much easier for yourself to paddle. This is usually attributed to the extra weight below helping to keep you afloat and also meaning there is less dead weight on the board.

The Width

In most cases the average width of the modern surfboard is around 17 to 19 inches. Yet again you should be aiming to be on the higher end of the scale and veering towards the 19 inch mark. Since most of the first waves you’ll be encountering will be small at around one to three feet. Having a wider board will also mean that you’ll have more of a feeling under your feet meaning you’ll have less chance of getting bogged down.

The Thickness

Just exactly like the length and width extra thickness means flotation. At this point you’ll have a pretty good idea that having a larger board is much more beneficial to beginners. A large thick board will make it very easy for you to paddle up to the waves. An ideal thickness level should be around 2 to 3 inches and should be at its thickest near the middle of the board.

Shape

For a beginner surfboarder a wider head is much better than a pointy one. The widest point of the board should also be just above from the centre point meaning greater stability for yourself. As far as the tail goes you shouldn’t be too worried but it’s known that a rounded tail is preferable.

By Hayden Rhodes

Kelly Slater is a phenomenon. Over the last two decades he has consistently pushed professional surfing, led the way in surf training and dominated the competition. Has there ever been another athlete that has dominated their sporting scene with such intensity for such a long duration?

He busted onto the surfing scene twenty years ago and was the youngest surfer to ever take the crown and pick up his first world title. He has been a dominant force to be reckoned with ever since. Every year he sends shivers down the spines of new tour surfers who know his ability to tear waves and competitors apart.

While taking the sport to new limits he has become an incredible athlete with a huge variety of sporting skills encompassing speed, timing, endurance, power, flexibility, agility, determination, balance and of course surfing specific fitness. Has surf training and his competition record made him the greatest athlete ever?

Few athletes’ start at the top at such a young age and remain there for so long. Kelly has had the best surfers in the world clambering around trying to out perform him for over two decades. I remember when Jonah Lomu made the great New Zealand All Black Rugby Team and trampled the opposition in the 1995 World Cup and had a huge impact on the game, nowhere near as much impact Kelly Slater has had on professional surfing.

Tiger Woods is an inspiration and with regards to golf, leads the pack. He was the first professional golfer to bring specific sports training to golf and dominate other golfers around him, yet is he as great as an athlete as Kelly? They both posses technical skills, speed, timing, power, co-ordination and can always ask a New Zealand caddy for club selection advice, yet if they both left the club house for a round of eighteen holes and then paddled out at Jeffrerys’ bay, South Africa, I wonder what the score card would be at the end of the day?

What about talented athletes from the world’s most popular sport football? I’m sure both Maradona and Ronaldinho could teach Kelly a trick or two, and I bet he would pick them up pretty quick. Both footballers however would find it impossible just to paddle out at a local beach break let alone learn a trick.

Tennis lovers will want me to mention Roger Federer who has been the main man for tennis over the last few years. There is no doubt he would kick Kelly in a match yet will he be the number one dominant seed for twenty years, don’t think so.

There have been many other outstanding athletes like Michael Jordan who dominated the NBA league for many years and Jack Nicholas another golfing legend or George Foreman the hardest hitter, can we even compare between them about who or what makes the greatest athlete ever?

Perhaps because I use surf training to help me perform better I am biased. Yet I have been involved in many team and individual competitive sports and nothing tests me more than surfing. Each day is a new environment where Mother Nature can be friendly or destructive, each spot has new elements to consider, and the playing field is constantly moving. The technical attributes alone make surfing one of the most advanced sports in the world.

I believe surfing tests more athletic skills than any other sport and surf training has helped Kelly remain at the top of professional surfing for so long. Twenty years on a roll dominating the professional scene, who else has done that?
